a bit about me...

Everyone remembers their first love.

The one you can’t bear to spend a waking moment without.

The one that makes your heart skip just thinking about it.

My first crush was with a beat-up old Minolta camera.

I have always been interested in art, so photography was a natural transition from sketching with my hands to “drawing with light” through my camera.

My name is Fran Chelico and I am a Vancouver Wedding & Portrait Photographer...This is my blog.  A place where I can share my latest weddings ... portraits ... and random thoughts and photos ... please feel free to hang out ... snoop around ... check things out ... leave comments ... ask questions ... whatever ... thanks for stopping by ... come back anytime :)

An article was written about my photography … what an honor | Vancouver Wedding Photographer

I had the privilege of being interviewed and listed as one of 50 Essential Portrait Photographers in the Vancouver area.  To be among these talented woman is truly an honor!  Thank you for adding me to this amazing list!

50 Essential Portrait Photographers: Fran Chelico of Fran Chelico Photography

Photographer Fran Chelico loves to hang out, both with her long-time friends and new acquaintances… mostly to laugh while enjoying a glass of wine!  When she`s not focusing on her photography she`s just a North Shore girl who loves to have fun with her husband Mike and her son Max on the beach in the summer and the slopes in the winter.

Why did you get into photography?

As a child, I was always interested in art. I would prefer to sketch images of things around me than to play with dolls. When I was 13 years old I landed my first job as a photographer’s assistant and that’s when I reallyfound my passion. I enjoy capturing special moments for people, I find it very satisfying and fulfilling. That feeling you get when you know you just got ‘THE’ shot … it’s exciting!

Tell us a bit about your company?

I had left photography for a few years and worked in various corporations, but always felt like a piece of me was missing. Six years ago while living in NYC I decided I wanted to explore a career as a photographer. I wentback to school to learn all about digital photography and after some early success with formal shoots and encouragement from my husband Mike, I opened my own photography company when we moved to North Vancouver. That was four years ago. My current business focuses predominantly on weddings andportraits (I like interacting with people!) but I do the occasional commercial shoot as well.

jon_juliana

How would you characterize your style of photography?

I am a natural light photographer. I like clean, elegant shots that are timeless, capturing real moments unfolding around me. A groom’s smile as he walks his new wife down the aisle; the tiny little hand in yours that will only be that size once; or the moment when your grandfather blows out his candles for the 95th time are all endearing moments that make life so sweet. I love to see the world as a photograph and would like to preserve those images for people before they fade away.

jennings_family-72

Who are your clients?

My clients are regular people who want to have images captured that tell a story of who they are. For the most part, they are not people who feel comfortable in front of the camera, so a photojournalistic style suits them. If I have done my job well, they will forget I am even there!

beach

What should your mom clients expect when working with you?

That I am a very easy going, patient and fun person to work with. It totally makes my day when a young client is dreading their photo shoot and at the end are disappointed it is over and say it was much easier then they thought it would be and that they had a ton of fun! That is one of the biggest compliments for me! For families, I would tell them I understand when your child is not cooperating because I have a 5 year old son and deal with that whenever I want to take photos of him “lol” sometimes you have to just let them do their thing until they get used to the camera or you get down on your hands and knees and play with them until you’ve developed a bond. You do anything to get the shot!

Anything else to add?

I love working with people, hearing people’s stories and capturing the moment for them! It makes me feel good that I can contribute a small bit to keeping their memories alive! I love what I do…

11 years ago today … Happy Anniversary | Vancouver Wedding Photographer

I woke up 11 years ago today with butterflies in my stomach like I have never felt before … it was a beautiful day with blue skies … all my friends and family were with me … and I was going to get married!  You couldn’t wipe the grin off my face all day!!  When my parents walked me down the aisle … I remember starting to cry … everyone was staring at me and it was starting to register … “oh my goodness!!  I’m getting married!!” … When we got to the end of the aisle and Michael held my hand … I felt like I had come home … a feeling of complete and utter calm came over me … I couldn’t wait to begin our life … he still has this affect over me whenever I start going a little crazy … he just needs to hold my hand and talk to me and I know it is going to be ok … he makes me laugh like no other … he is my biggest cheerleader … the best father to our son … and the person I always want to have around me … he is my rock … and the love of my life!

We have had such an amazing adventure the last 11 years … from selling our home in St. Catharines, Ontario and moving to Ithaca, NY … to New York City … and now to Vancouver.   We have had some ups and downs but it has only made us stronger as a team … We have traveled all over and have some great memories … I cannot wait to have more adventures with you by my side …

Happy Anniversary Michael … I love you!

Jenn & Justin | Granville Island Brewery Wedding | Vancouver Wedding Photographer

I was excited for Justin & Jenn’s wedding day to arrive!  They are amazing to be around…great in front of the camera … very happy & easy to laugh with…very genuine people…who are totally in love with each other!!  I adore them to bits!!  There were quite a few times throughout the day that I had tears trickling down my face as well … it was a beautiful wedding and I am honored to have been able to capture their day for them!

Bridal preparation shots are one of my favourite parts of the day and I couldn’t wait to meet these lovely ladies at Hotel l’hermitage.  When I showed up Jenn was one of the most calm and super excited brides I have ever seen … Amanda had already started putting on everyones makeup…so I busied myself with some detail shots until it was Jenn’s turn.

This amazing wedding ran so smoothly because of the wonderfully talented event planner Sandy Pandher.  Look forward to working with you again in the future.

Justin & Jenn … thank you again for being WICKED AWESOME!!!!  I heart you guys to the moon and back!!  I wish you many many years of happiness … xoxoxox

November 2, 2009 - 10:49 am Vancouver wedding photographers - the photo with a caption "are you kidding me, seriously gorgeous" is quite dark for a bridal theme but aesthetically speaking, the lighting and the bride's reaction is a good mixture.

November 2, 2009 - 10:47 am Vancouver wedding photographers - "Are you kidding me, seriously?" is a very nice photo! seriously. It's dark for a theme of getting married but aesthetically speaking, the combination of lighting and the bride's emotion is great!

Ben Pickering | CEO of Strutta | Dundarave Beach | West Vancouver Portrait Photographer

I had the pleasure of meeting Ben over drinks with my friends Maura and Dan, who also happen to be the founders of Strutta and Bootup Labs.   Ben had just moved to Vancouver from California as the new CEO of Strutta and we had talked about photography a bit, but since it’s wedding season for me, I kinda dropped the ball on setting up a photography session with him … until he reminded me at Launch Party …  We finally got together for this shoot at Dundarave Beach in West Vancouver where the weather was absolutely perfect and despite almost being hit by a train … I think Ben knocked this shoot out of the park!    Thanks Ben for being so easy to photograph and good luck at Strutta, it’s a great bunch!

Amy & Dillon | Valhalla Inn Wedding | Thunder Bay, Ontario | Destination Wedding Photographer

Where to begin with this lovely young woman … well for starters she is my cousin’s daughter and means alot to me.  Amy has such a HUGE heart that when I had my son in NYC, she was willing to leave her little town comfort zone to fly to the Big City to help me.  We really got to know each other and it meant the world to me having her there … and my son totally adored her!

I was over the moon happy when I heard she was getting married and even more excited when she asked me to be her wedding photographer!  I haven’t been to Geraldton in 11 years so it was an absolutely amazing trip spending time with my family.  We stayed at Kenogamisis Lake Resort for the week, which happens to be Amy’s parents properties, and got to hang out with all my fantastic family and eat tons of fresh fish!!

A few days later we drove to Thunder Bay to watch Amy & Dillon get married … what an adorable couple!  I had never met Dillon and couldn’t wait to give him a big huge hug and welcome him into our family…he is an absolute doll!

Now if anyone has spent even 5 minutes with Amy … she loves to make faces and is a huge ham (especially in front of the camera … lol)!!  Dillon is an avid hunter so her garter belt was made of camouflage and little pewter moose.

Way to capture those shots! Gas station shots are super cool-love the Self Serve signs. I'm so glad you were able to be Amy's photographer and all the family could get together again after so many years. It was a blast!

Tamara & Chad | Day After Session | Hamilton, Ontario | Destination Wedding Photographer

It’s been a crazy busy few weeks! I have been travelling all over Ontario & NewYork City for weddings … during one stop in Hamilton Tamara & Chad asked if I would do a “Day After” session with them (yeah yeah I know they got married in July, but I am not in Ontario very often)… Poor Chad was sooooo sick the day of the wedding we weren’t able to capture as many photos as we would have liked … so the 3 of us all headed out to Fifty Point Conservation again to snap off some shots :) .  It is always a hoot being with these two and I couldn’t be happier with what we were able to create.  I {heart} you guys to bits!  xo

The sky was amazing that night!!
